Chloe Enjoying The Park by Jack Anglin

The painting featured above is one of my most recent oils, Chloe Enjoying the Park, a fictional view of the very real place at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. There are some fascinating aspects about the place which I’ll comment on.

CIRCE INVIDIOSA after Waterhouse

A recent nocturne after the famous Waterhouse painting of Circe Invidiosa. This is a small oil, 12”x24”, and a piece I made for my deceased buddy Paul, a former housemate. Paul mentioned this painting as a favorite and I considered copying it accurately, but I much prefer my nocturne. Paul liked it, too, and got to enjoy my painting for a short while before his death. I wish we had much more time together, we would have done a lot of hiking and exploring. Too bad!

Castle Hill Lighthouse

Here's my latest underway, a 12x24 inch oil of the Castle Hill Lighthouse. There's more to do, some foreground work and the fishing boat, some fussing here and there. I'm happy with it. What do you think?

Beach at Oceanwind

This is a private beach in Newport, Rhode Island, a place I get to visit frequently. It's different every time, beautiful to observe as the sea and sky change. The beach is all stones, each polished and rounded from eons of washing and movement. It's not for sale, but a gift for a friend, and I just wanted to show it to you.

The Wreck at Beaver Tail Lighthouse

My painting of The Wreck at Beaver Tail Lighthouse

This lighthouse is a fun place to visit, especially on a day with high surf. It's at the south end of Jamestown, RI, at the west edge of the Newport Harbor entrance. Here I've imagined a small craft that got loose or wrecked somehow on the jagged rocks A shipwreck must have happened several times?

Sachuest Point Park

Here is a finished view of Sachuest Point Park in Newport, RI. I'm very happy with it! There's a bench near the southern tip of the park and trail, on the east side, so this view is as one would be looking to the northeast.

It's a lovely place to walk, and the rocky coast offers many interesting vistas.

A Private Beach View

A fine start of a 12" by 24" oil of a private beach view, on the east side of Newport, RI. There's more to do once it dries, but I'm happy with this image.

Sachuest Point Park / Start

This is the underpainting and a good start for a view at Sachuest Point Park in Newport, RI. See above for the more developed image. There's a bench near the southern tip of the park and trail, on the east side, so this view is as one would be looking to the northeast. It's a lovely place to walk, and the rocky coast offers many interesting vistas.

I planned to add a few more details to this one, but kept the existing color scheme. I love this fall looking contrast of orange and blues. Perhaps the trees and grasses would turn this color after a hurricane sprays saltwater. I've seen that kind of salt burn along the coastal vegetation in North Carolina after a bad storm. It takes a while, but plants return to green in time.

St. Croix Paintings

Here's my first St. Croix painting, a view (without houses) from the Columbus Landing Beach, northwest of Christiansted near Salt River. It's oil on linen, about 10" tall by 14.5" wide and is not stretched, so it can be matted and framed with glass or mounted and framed flat, or mounted if preferred. I'm asking $400 for my first picture--below is the matching piece.

Highway 70 Barn

This is the well kept old barn on the curve of Highway 70 between Kinston and La Grange in eastern North Carolina. A great produce stand is open just to the west in the summer -by the gas station.

To describe myself and my art is to span a range of media, subjects, and techniques. I've used and enjoyed everything from pastels to oils, and created many illustrations, fine portraits, plein air day paintings, large studio paintings, and a lot of portrait commissions.

I'm one of those artists who has quite a bit of experience making art in public, where people can witness my paintings take shape. One of the joys of making art is sharing art, and while working in environments where people can see and speak with me, people often inquire about my materials, techniques, or intentions, and they want to share stories of art and artists that have meant something to them--such as telling me about their grandmother who never had a lesson. I usually love it and have no problem painting while chatting and hearing from interested and interesting people.

I like sharing what I've learned, and occasionally I teach classes, and always enjoy mentoring serious students. In fact, I'm completing a book about art, with practical tips and things most people never hear about nor consider.

ABOUT MY MONET CRITIQUE

I grew up with a decent reproduction of this famous Monet painting above. One hundred years after the French artist made it, it was hanging right over the TV console in our living room. Anytime we spent looking at the TV, this painting by Monet was in view, and so it was subconsciously ingrained into my psyche.

From an early age I was influenced by Monet. We share the same birthday, November 14, as does King Charles, something my mother was fond of telling me. I saw some other pictures by Monet, even was appointed to a committee at school to purchase a framed reproduction as a class gift, and we chose one of Monet's sailboat paintings, The Bridge at Argenteuil.

I was a prolific little artist, always drawing something, eagerly involved in any art activity at school or elsewhere. In fact, in the second grade I won a city wide poster contest sponsored by The Humane Society. My creation was crude, of course, and typical for a child, but empathetic and a sad illustration of abuse and neglect of a poor dog. I can still see the picture in my mind's eye, but I don't believe it was ever returned to me or my parents--I wish I had it!

After that minor victory (but it was a blue ribbon and certificate for my grade in all of Pittsburgh) I quickly became the class artist as well as the family artist. My theory about artistic development in children will come out later in my critiques, I don't want to get too far off track. Just please try to get the idea that I'm a grateful person and glad I got to develop my artistic talents and still get to paint, and Monet has always been a part of that!
